AI is rapidly reshaping cybersecurity, but not in a simple good-versus-bad way. It is both a tool for defense and a force multiplier for attack. That tension is what makes it one of the most important technology questions facing organisations today.
On the offensive side, AI lowers the barrier to entry for attackers. Activities that once required a high level of technical expertise can now be accelerated or partially automated. That includes generating more convincing phishing messages, identifying vulnerabilities more quickly, and increasing the scale and speed of attacks. In practice, this means more actors can launch more sophisticated attacks with less effort. The threat is not only that AI creates entirely new risks, but that it makes existing risks easier to exploit.
At the same time, AI offers clear defensive value. Security teams are already using AI-driven capabilities to detect anomalies, analyse behaviour, process huge amounts of data, and highlight threats that human teams might otherwise miss. Used well, these tools can reduce noise, improve response times, and help analysts focus on the signals that matter most. But the strongest theme in this discussion is that human oversight remains essential. AI can surface issues faster, but it should not be treated as a fully trusted replacement for expert judgment.
There are also deeper structural concerns. Regulation continues to lag behind the pace of technological change, leaving governments and organisations in a reactive position.
Questions of liability, accountability, and governance remain unresolved, especially as systems become more autonomous. At the same time, there is a growing risk of skills erosion. If people increasingly rely on AI-generated code and AI-assisted workflows without understanding what sits underneath, we may create a new generation of technical debt that becomes difficult to maintain, audit, or secure.
For consumers, the risks are just as significant. AI systems encourage interaction in ways that feel personal and trustworthy, which can lead to oversharing and misplaced confidence in outputs that may be inaccurate. In a world of increasingly convincing deepfakes and synthetic content, traditional assumptions about trust and authentication are under pressure.
The key lesson is not that AI should be resisted, but that it should be approached with realism. AI is now part of the cybersecurity landscape. The organisations that will navigate it best are not those chasing hype, but those combining innovation with strong fundamentals: clear governance, technical literacy, critical thinking, and a commitment to keeping humans in the loop.
