The story of Srirama and Tataka is an important episode from the Ramayana. It highlights the courage of Lord Rama and his duty to protect righteousness.
Tataka was the daughter of Suketu, a Yaksha king. Suketu performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma, wishing for a son. However, Brahma blessed him with a powerful daughter named Tataka, who was beautiful and possessed immense strength.
Later, Tataka married Sunda. They had two sons, Maricha and Subahu, and a daughter named Kaikasi. Tataka and Sunda wished to strengthen their lineage, so they arranged Kaikasi’s marriage to the sage Visravas. From this union was born Ravana, who later became the mighty king of Lanka.
At one point, Suketu was cursed to death by Sage Agastya. Filled with anger, Tataka sought revenge against the sage, with the support of her son Subahu. Enraged by her actions, Sage Agastya cursed Tataka. She lost her beauty and transformed into a fierce demoness with a cruel and violent nature.
After the curse, Tataka lived in a forest near the river Ganga. The region became known as Tataka Vanam. She terrorized the people there, attacking travelers and destroying peace in the area.
Tataka and her son Subahu also disturbed the sacred yajnas of many sages by showering flesh and blood upon the rituals. Sage Visvamitra suffered greatly from their attacks.
Unable to bear the trouble any longer, Visvamitra approached King Dasaratha of Kosala for help. The king sent his young sons, Rama and Lakshmana, along with the sage to guard the yajna and protect the forest.
When they entered Tataka’s forest, Sage Visvamitra ordered Rama to slay the demoness. Rama hesitated at first because Tataka was a woman. Instead, he first disabled her by cutting off her hands. But Tataka continued to attack using her magical powers, changing forms and becoming invisible.
Visvamitra then reminded Rama that protecting innocent people was the duty of a prince, regardless of whether the enemy was a man or woman. Understanding his responsibility, Rama finally shot a powerful arrow that pierced Tataka’s heart and ended her reign of terror.
Thus, Lord Rama freed the forest and restored peace for the sages and the people.
