Each of 3 streams at MIMS Learning Live North in Liverpool this year will feature ‘fireside chats’ between the stream chairs and other experienced clinicians, to elicit learning for GPs that addresses the realities of clinical practice.
The three fireside chats will cover challenges in cardio-renal metabolic medicine (CVRM), practical issues in dermatology, and key issues around perimenopause and menopause.
CVRM session
Professor Raj Thakkar, GP and president of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society, will talk to GP and senior clinical lecturer Dr Eduard Shantsila about challenges in cardio-renal metabolic medicine (CVRM).
He says the ‘open and honest’ discussion will cover topics such as lipids, atrial fibrillation, use of SGLT2 inhibitors, diagnosis using wearable technology, and starting guideline-directed medical therapies in the absence of diagnosis.
He said: ‘I’m hoping it’s going to be a no holds barred session. Anything from how do we apply the evidence to practice in terms of patients with frailty, [to] how do we tackle really difficult issues in terms of end of life when someone’s got heart failure?’
Dermatology discussion
Dr Stephanie Gallard, GP in Liverpool and dermatology educator, will co-present a session on dermatology with Dr S. Ahsan Raza, GP with a special interest in dermatology. This will provide practical, relevant points in a GP-focused session.
She said this would be: ‘An illuminating discussion about new products and techniques to sharpen up your dermatology management – all questions welcome!’
Perimenopause and menopause
GP and BMS menopause specialist Dr Olivia Hum, and GP with an extended role in women’s health, Dr Lindsey Thomas will co-present a fireside chat about controversies and best practice in menopause.
Dr Hum said this was a chance for GPs to ‘join two leading menopause experts while they unpack the latest guidance, key issues and current controversies in women’s health.’
