Dutch consumer body forces Microsoft into about turn on upgrades
Life
European consumers with a Microsoft account can get free Windows 10 updates for another year after Redmond caved to pressure from consumer organisations including Euroconsumers and the Dutch Consumers’ Association.
The Consumers’ Association welcomed the pledge, but said that as long as there is a large group of consumers with Windows 10 computers, Microsoft should update them free of charge even after one year.
Microsoft wanted to stop supporting Windows 10 computers on 14 October 2025, which would leave them vulnerable to hackers. In July 2025, the Consumers’ Association called on Microsoft to support Windows 10 for longer.
Microsoft previously offered up to one year of additional security updates for a $30 fee. In June 2025, Microsoft announced that this would be free for consumers if they used certain Microsoft services. The Consumers’ Association felt that Microsoft was abusing its dominant position by doing so. Microsoft is now dropping that claim.
