Searches for “skin changes during pregnancy” have surged by 350% in the past month, with “pregnancy safe skincare” queries up by 250%, according to Google Trends. Expectant mothers are clearly seeking guidance to achieve that coveted pregnancy glow safely. To address this, Cult Beauty partnered with pharmacist Elizabeth Japal, founder of The Derma Lab, to share expert advice on pregnancy-safe skincare ingredients and those to avoid.
How pregnancy affects your skin
Pregnancy triggers a range of skin changes due to hormonal fluctuations. “Skin changes are driven by hormonal fluctuations, primarily the increase in estrogen, progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG),” explains Elizabeth Japal. “These hormones can affect the skin’s oil glands, melanin production and immune response, leading to everything from acne and pigmentation to increased redness or itchiness.” Common issues include increased sensitivity, dryness, breakouts, and pigmentation concerns like melasma, often called the “mask of pregnancy.” Some women experience a radiant glow from increased circulation and oil production, while others face reactive or irritated skin.
Skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Certain skincare ingredients can pose risks during pregnancy, as they may be absorbed into the bloodstream and affect the developing fetus. Elizabeth Japal highlights the following to steer clear of:
- Retinoids (including retinol and tretinoin): Oral retinoids, like isotretinoin for severe acne, are linked to serious birth defects. Topical retinoids, though absorbed in smaller amounts, carry potential risks due to systemic absorption, making them best avoided.
- High-dose salicylic acid: Low concentrations (under 2%) are likely safe, but higher doses, found in chemical peels or strong acne treatments, increase systemic exposure risks and should be avoided.
- Certain essential oils: Oils like rosemary, sage, and peppermint can be sensitising, especially as skin becomes more irritable during pregnancy.
- Chemical sunscreens: Ingredients such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate absorb UV rays and may enter the bloodstream, raising concerns. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are safer alternatives.
Japal advises: “The best way to understand which skin care products are safe during pregnancy is to consult your GP, midwife, or pharmacist and look for reputable brands that specify pregnancy-safe formulations.”
Safe skincare ingredients for pregnancy
Pregnancy doesn’t mean pausing your skincare routine. Several ingredients are both safe and effective for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin during hormonal changes. Elizabeth Japal recommends the following pregnancy-friendly options:
- Niacinamide: This versatile ingredient reduces redness and pigmentation while strengthening the skin barrier, making it ideal for pregnancy-related skin concerns.
- Vitamin C: A potent antioxidant, vitamin C protects against environmental stressors and lightens dark spots by inhibiting melanin production, promoting a radiant complexion.
- Hyaluronic acid: A powerful humectant, hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin, providing deep hydration without a heavy or greasy feel, perfect for dry or stretched skin.
- Azelaic acid: Safe for treating acne and melasma, this gentle acid unclogs pores and reduces inflammation, suitable for sensitive skin.
- Ceramides and peptides: These ingredients restore the skin barrier, lock in moisture, and gently nurture the skin, supporting its strength and hydration.
Expert tips for pregnancy skincare
Japal emphasises consulting healthcare professionals before introducing new products, as skin sensitivity varies. Opting for fragrance-free, pregnancy-safe formulations from trusted brands can minimise risks. Mineral sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher are crucial for protecting sensitive skin from UV damage, especially as pregnancy can increase pigmentation issues like melasma.
For those navigating acne, dryness, or pigmentation, Japal suggests sticking to gentle cleansers, hydrating serums, and moisturisers with safe ingredients. Regular exfoliation with low-dose glycolic or lactic acid can also help maintain smooth skin without irritation.
By choosing pregnancy-safe ingredients and avoiding risky ones, expectant mothers can maintain their glow while prioritising their baby’s safety. Always check product labels and consult professionals to ensure your routine is tailored to your needs.
