Meta is about to take a major step forward in the world of augmented reality. At next month’s Connect conference, the company will introduce its brand-new Hypernova smart glasses, alongside an innovative wristband capable of reading hand gestures. This unveiling marks a significant milestone in Meta’s long-term vision for AR technology.

The Hypernova glasses, developed in collaboration with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica (best known for Ray-Ban), blend technology and fashion into a single device. With a price tag of around $800 (approximately €682), the glasses feature a digital display integrated into the right lens, enabling users to receive notifications, take photos and videos, make calls, send messages, listen to music, and interact with an AI assistant.

The Hypernova is designed with a monocular screen and a 20-degree field of view – more than enough for basic interactions and notifications, though not yet the full AR experience we know from sci-fi movies.

In addition to the glasses, Meta will also introduce a wristband. Leveraging neural technology from CTRL Labs – a start-up acquired by Meta – this band can read the electrical signals from the wearer’s hand. As a result, users can control the device with simple hand movements, without any physical contact with the glasses themselves.

This futuristic control method paves the way for far more natural interactions with smart devices and fits Meta’s vision for a more intuitive digital experience.

Meta’s approach is notably conservative yet thoroughly considered. Mark Zuckerberg stated back in 2017 that it would take five to seven years before AR technology would truly come of age. The launch of the Hypernova demonstrates the company’s commitment to that prediction.

Unlike Meta’s more experimental Orion prototype (pictured) – a cutting-edge AR device with binocular imaging that is still years away from commercialisation – the Hypernova offers a practical interim solution for consumers.

Ray-Ban success inspires confidence

The partnership with Luxottica has served Meta well. Since 2023, more than two million Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses have been sold. The combination of Luxottica’s expertise in eyewear design and Meta’s technological know-how has proven to be a winning formula.

The collaboration is also paying off financially: Luxottica has seen its smart glasses revenue triple year-over-year, indicating a growing market demand.

There are, however, ongoing challenges. Meta’s Reality Labs – the division behind augmented and virtual reality development – has been incurring heavy losses since 2020. The considerable investments in this technology represent a long-term bet – one that Meta hopes will pay dividends in the future.

By pursuing a strategic partnership model with Luxottica, the risks are more evenly distributed. Meta also holds exclusive rights to Luxottica’s brands for AR glasses and now owns a three percent stake in the company – an unmistakable sign of their shared commitment to this technological future.
