Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, believes the carefully curated aesthetic that was once synonymous with the platform is now a thing of the past. He attributes this shift to the rise of AI-generated content.
In a recent post on Threads, Mosseri said that Instagram needs to adapt to the influx of synthetic media. He noted that users have moved away from sharing polished photos and instead prefer authentic moments captured through “shoe shots” and candid photos shared in private.
The ease with which AI tools can create realistic images has led Mosseri to predict a shift toward a “more raw aesthetic”. He believes that heavily stylised content will become commonplace and, ultimately, uninteresting.
Social media platforms like Instagram face the challenge of distinguishing between real and AI-generated content. The growing sophistication of AI technology is making it increasingly difficult for platforms to accurately identify synthetic media.
Mosseri has suggested a number of possible solutions, including camera companies cryptographically signing photos to verify their authenticity. He also stresses the need for more transparency on Instagram, such as clear labeling of AI-generated content and information about the creators behind posts.
Beyond that, Mosseri is calling for improved creative controls that allow human users to compete with AI-driven content creation.
He laments the erosion of trust in visual media, arguing that it is no longer safe to assume that photos and videos accurately reflect reality.
