I was super worried after stoma surgery about how I would return to work and how my stoma would adapt into my working lifestyle, but when I started to navigate it, it was a lot more smooth sailing than I had imagined!
Carrying extra supplies
This was a priority for me. I make sure to have extra supplies in my car and in the drawers at my desk. In my emergency kits I carry extra bags, wipes, disposable bags, dry wipes, freeseals, adhesive remover sprays and mint drops. Having these close by gives me reassurance that if an emergency does happen, I have everything I need close by.
Workspace
As I’ve said, I have an emergency supply kit located in the drawers at my desk, and my office has disabled toilets nearby which is ideal if and when I do need to change my bag.
Planning ahead
I have experienced leaks during my working day in the office. I used to get really overwhelmed with this but now I let my emotions out, give myself a minute to breathe and remind myself that I have spare supplies and extra clothing in the car so it’s not too much of a hurdle to get over.
Food
If I know I have a busier day ahead where I might not get as much time to empty my bag etc. then I will be cautious of what I eat and really try to limit things that may impact my stoma, such as gassy food, fizzy drinks or foods that require a lot of chewing etc. Again, If I have a busy day, I’ll try to wear more loose, comfortable clothing to allow my stoma to have space.
