Etihad Rail passenger service on track for 2026 launch after Dubai–Fujairah test

The Etihad Rail passenger service has completed a successful pre-launch test journey from Dubai to Fujairah, bringing the UAE one step closer to launching its first intercity passenger rail network in 2026.

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, joined Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, and a senior delegation of officials for the milestone trip, which covered the first phase of the route from Al Qudra in Dubai to Fujairah.

Once operational, the service will connect 11 cities across the UAE, from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah on the east coast, marking a major leap in national connectivity and mobility.

The Etihad Rail passenger service will complement the country’s growing freight network, which is projected to move more than 60m tonnes annually by 2030.

By integrating passenger and freight operations, the railway will enhance national logistics efficiency, improve accessibility between key destinations, and reduce pressure on the country’s highways.

Etihad Rail projects that each train will carry up to 400 passengers, with annual ridership reaching 36.5m by 2030.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi said: “The launch of Etihad Rail’s passenger services will represent a critical step in our efforts to expand and upgrade the UAE’s transport network.

“This landmark infrastructure project is already expediting the movement of goods and materials between industrial zones, ports and transport hubs, and will now also provide passenger services to enable greater connectivity for our population and, in doing so, support sustainable economic development and reduce harmful emissions.”

He emphasised that the project aligns closely with the UAE’s net-zero by 2050 strategy, supporting both sustainability and economic diversification objectives.

Connectivity milestone

Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, said: “We were honoured to welcome Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi and showcase Etihad Rail’s passenger service, which marks a new milestone in our journey, driven by the vision of our wise leadership and under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail.

“This project reflects Etihad Rail’s commitment to advancing an integrated transport network that enhances connectivity across the UAE and supports the transition towards a more sustainable and efficient future of mobility.”

Malak added that preparations for the 2026 commercial launch are progressing rapidly, with safety testing and infrastructure commissioning already underway.

Connecting ports, cities, and industries

The Etihad Rail network spans 900km, connecting Ghuwaifat to Fujairah and linking key ports, including Khalifa Port, Jebel Ali Port, and Ruwais Port.

The system streamlines the movement of goods from main entry points to industrial zones, enabling manufacturers to distribute output efficiently across global supply chains.

Etihad Rail will enhance national trade, support industries, and empower communities through greater connectivity by combining its freight and passenger capabilities.

As the UAE continues its investments in advanced infrastructure, the Etihad Rail project underscores the nation’s commitment to innovation, regional integration, and a low-carbon economy.

By replacing millions of road journeys and improving freight efficiency, the network will reduce emissions, cut travel times, and support economic growth across every emirate.
