Doctor Shares 7 Simple Ways to Boost Well-Being This Autumn and Winter

As autumn and winter bring shorter days and colder temperatures, many people experience lower energy, reduced mood, and changes in skin health. To help manage these seasonal shifts, Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Pharmacy, in collaboration with Cult Beauty, has outlined seven practical and science-based tips for maintaining wellbeing.

  1. Take vitamin D supplements. Shorter days reduce natural vitamin D production, which affects mood, immunity, and energy. “Recent studies show that 20% of the UK population have a vitamin D deficiency and 60% have levels below the recommended amount,” says Dr Lee. The NHS recommends that adults take at least 400 IU daily.
  2. Exercise outdoors. “Exercising outdoors increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BNF), important for brain growth and development,” explains Dr Lee. Research from the University of Essex shows that even brief exposure to nature can lower cortisol, while the earthy scent of rain, geosmin, may stimulate immunity.
  3. Protect your skin. “Moisturising twice daily with a nourishing cream-based formula helps restore the skin barrier and lock in hydration,” says Dr Lee. Hyaluronic acid, squalene, glycerin, and vitamin E are key ingredients. The British Skin Foundation also reminds people that UV rays remain a risk in winter, making daily SPF essential.
  4. Try light therapy. LED masks stimulate collagen and reduce inflammation while influencing serotonin levels. “Red light wavelengths are particularly effective,” says Dr Lee. A 2021 study confirmed these benefits, showing their impact on both mental health and skin vitality.
  5. Use essential oils. Aromatherapy targets the brain’s limbic system, which influences emotions and memory. Citrus and peppermint oils boost energy, while lavender and frankincense promote relaxation. Essential oils reduce stress, and adding them to baths or diffusers can create a restorative atmosphere.
  6. Prioritise sleep. Quality sleep is vital for overall wellbeing. Dr Lee recommends calming oils and silk pillowcases, which reduce hair breakage and support smoother skin. The Sleep Council reports that 74% of UK adults struggle with sleep in winter, making consistent bedtime routines especially important.
  7. Adjust your body care routine. Cold weather can cause dryness, so avoid very hot showers and over-exfoliation. “Use nourishing creams and hand moisturisers after washing to protect the skin barrier,” advises Dr Lee. The British Association of Dermatologists highlights that frequent moisturising prevents irritation during the colder months.
