The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a profound transformation thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). While drug development has traditionally taken ten years or longer and cost billions of euros, with a high failure rate, AI promises to speed up the process and reduce costs.

Insilico Medicine has developed Rentocertib, the first drug to be designed entirely with the help of AI and now entering the clinical testing phase. This achievement underscores the growing confidence in the potential of AI within the pharmaceutical sector.

The market for AI-driven drugs is expected to be worth billions of euros in the coming years, with companies such as Eli Lilly among the frontrunners. Their collaboration with Nvidia aims to develop a supercomputer capable of virtually screening millions of molecules for drug development.

The rapid progress of Rentocertib through the clinical phases – the initial stages were completed in less than two years – highlights the efficiency of AI. Rentocertib, which targets idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a fatal lung disease, showed promising results in a phase 2 study, with improved lung function and minimal side effects.

The impact of AI goes beyond drug discovery. Projects such as AlphaFold2 by Google DeepMind have revolutionised the prediction of protein structures, pushing biomedical research further forward. Although AI has not completely replaced researchers, it is radically changing workflows and roles within the pharmaceutical industry.

Investors are increasingly drawn to AI-driven pharmaceutical start-ups. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has invested heavily in companies such as RetroBio, which uses AI to develop treatments to slow ageing, and Chai Discovery, which is already generating new molecules using AI models. Success stories are piling up, indicating that the role of AI in drug discovery is growing rapidly.
