Microsoft and OpenAI have agreed on the next step towards greater independence for the AI company.

In addition to the commercial operations of the AI company there will be a non-profit (public benefit corporation) that will have a stake worth $100 billion.

The result of the intended restructuring of the partnership is that OpenAI will have freedom to chase the same customers as Microsoft with its AI services, be able to buy AI capacity elsewhere and more easily attract money from the market.

Last spring, Microsoft was already loosening the reins in the relationship and OpenAI could raise money from third parties.

Microsoft has invested $13 billion in the ChatGPT developer since 2019, which started as a research lab but in no time grew into something even Google looks at with suspicion.
