Google has announced that, unlike Meta, it will sign the European Union’s voluntary code of practice for AI. According to a blog post by Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs and Chief Legal Officer at parent company Alphabet, this guideline helps companies comply with the new AI Act.
The code was drafted by 13 independent experts and provides guidelines for, among other things, supplying summaries of training data and complying with copyright regulations.
Although signing is voluntary, companies that do sign will benefit from greater legal certainty and lower administrative burdens, according to the EU.
Google sees signing the code as a way to give European citizens and businesses access to safe, high-quality AI tools.
At the same time, Kent Walker expressed concerns: aspects of the AI Act and the code of conduct could stifle innovation, especially if they deviate from EU copyright law, cause delays in approval procedures, or expose trade secrets, which could harm Europe’s competitive position.
OpenAI and Mistral have also committed to the code. Microsoft is also expected to sign.
