A new study highlights a shift among younger Brits towards quick, high-protein snacks and short, intense workouts, reflecting changing lifestyles.
Research by breakfast and snack brand FUEL10K reveals that 68% of people skip meals at least once a week, with younger adults aged 16 to 28 most likely to do so. The trend, dubbed “micro-fitness and macro-snacking,” shows 65% of Gen Z prioritise protein in their snack choices, driven not just by gym-goers but also by busy individuals seeking convenient nutrition. Nearly a third of people now eat lunch at their desks, citing time constraints.
When it comes to exercise, brevity is key. Around 1 in 5 Gen Z adults prefer workouts under 20 minutes, nearly double the rate of older generations. This rise in short, functional fitness routines aligns with a growing demand for quick, nutrient-dense meals that fit fast-paced schedules.
To meet this demand, FUEL10K, known for its protein-rich breakfasts, has launched a new savoury range including Noodle Pots, Instant Soup Sachets, and Microwaveable Protein Bowls, all designed for busy, health-conscious consumers. Available from April 2025 in Sainsbury’s and from late May 2025 in Tesco, the range offers flavours like Warming Mexican Bean Chilli, Rich Moroccan Chickpea Tagine, Roast Chicken Noodles, and Creamy Tomato Soup, with prices from £1.50 to £3. Each product is high in protein, low in fat, and requires no refrigeration, making it ideal for on-the-go consumption.
Arj Thiruchelvam, a top running coach and nutritionist who tested FUEL10K’s new savoury meals, said: “It’s challenging to find convenient meals that pack nutrition as we try and squeeze in short bursts of exercise before, after and even during our work or study. The micro fitness trend is certainly being reflected in our more regular eating habits and the good news is that, to achieve your training goals, it makes no difference whether you have three or five meals per day. Many of us are finding it better to eat smaller portions more often and FUEL10k is providing a flexible solution for high protein but convenient meals and snacks, as part of a balanced diet. It’s ideal for busy, motivated people who don’t have much time to think about nutrition but want to keep fit and healthy.”
Kate Yateman-Smith, brand director of quick meals, snacks, and soup at Premier Foods, which owns FUEL10K, added: “We’ve seen a real shift in how younger people approach food and fitness – they want fuel, fast. They’re working through lunch, hitting short workouts, and eating on the go. This range is our answer to that lifestyle: proper great-tasting meals, packed with protein, no fridge needed.”
The range aims to re-energise the ambient snack and soup categories with bold, familiar flavours and added nutritional benefits. Noodle Pots, offering 20g of protein per serving, come in Roast Chicken, Katsu Curry, Sizzling Beef, and Sweet Chilli variants. Instant Soup Sachets, available in Tomato, Chicken, Vegetable, and Mushroom, are low-fat with no artificial preservatives. Microwaveable Protein Bowls, high in plant-based protein and fibre, cater to those seeking quick, satisfying meals.
This shift reflects broader 2025 food trends, with protein driving growth in snacking categories as consumers associate it with satiety, energy, and health. FUEL10K’s expansion taps into this demand, targeting younger shoppers and time-poor individuals, from students to office workers, who seek affordable, nutritious options without sacrificing taste.
The products are now available nationwide, offering a practical solution for those balancing busy schedules with health goals. For more details, visit FUEL10K’s website or follow them on Instagram and TikTok for serving ideas and updates.
