ANBERNIC RG Rotate Android Retro Gaming Handheld Demo 2

ANBERNIC has been busy lately, making retro handhelds in every shape you can think of. There’s the clamshell. The slider. Earlier this year, the brand even launched a wireless controller with a built-in heart rate monitor. But the RG Rotate might be the company’s most fun design yet, because at first glance, you’d never guess it’s a gaming device.

When it’s closed, the ANBERNIC RG Rotate looks like a small music player. It has a square screen, clean lines, and a simple design that fits right in next to your earbuds and wallet. But push the screen to one side and it swivels up on a hinge, showing a full D-pad, four face buttons, and shoulder buttons underneath. Surprise: it’s a Game Boy. It’s a clever trick, and it makes the RG Rotate a retro handheld that doubles as a media player, something none of ANBERNIC’s other devices have pulled off.

The Hinge That Makes It All Work

The screen rotates on what ANBERNIC calls a custom-made ultra-thin metal hinge, and the company says it’s been tested heavily for long-term use. That matters, because hinges on portable gaming devices have a history of wearing out over time. If ANBERNIC has truly solved the durability problem, the swivel design could be much more than a cool gimmick.ANBERNIC RG Rotate Android Retro Gaming Handheld

The hinge lets you turn the screen to change how the display is oriented, so the RG Rotate can fit different game shapes depending on what you’re playing. The screen rotates a full 90 degrees, giving you plenty of room to find the right angle for each game. That’s really handy for retro games, since older titles were made for all sorts of screen sizes.

Built for Pockets, Not for Power Users

ANBERNIC is selling the RG Rotate in two materials: aluminum for people who want a premium feel, and plastic for anyone who likes something lighter (and probably cheaper). Both versions come in two colors, Polar Black and Aurora Silver.ANBERNIC RG Rotate Android Retro Gaming Handheld

The controls are kept simple on purpose, with a layout similar to ANBERNIC’s folding RG35XXSP. You get a D-pad, four face buttons, and L2/R2 shoulder buttons that can switch between high and low positions to fit your grip.

There’s also a lanyard loop, so you can clip it to a bag when you’re on the go. There are no thumbsticks, so this one is best suited for games that don’t need analog input. For Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, SNES, Genesis, and even some PS1 and Sega Saturn titles, the button setup should work just fine.

ANBERNIC is pushing the music player angle hard in its marketing, and it makes sense. With the screen folded down over the controls, the RG Rotate really does look like a media player.

What We Don’t Know Yet

ANBERNIC hasn’t said what processor is inside the RG Rotate, so we can’t say for sure how powerful it really is. The promo video does show a 2,000 mAh battery on the back with support for 10W charging. That’s a small battery, but it could be just fine for retro games that don’t need a lot of power. There’s also a microSD card slot for extra storage.ANBERNIC RG Rotate Android Retro Gaming Handheld

One thing that seems to be missing: a 3.5mm headphone jack. That means you’ll need to use the USB-C port for wired audio. For a device that’s being sold partly as a music player, leaving out the headphone jack feels like a missed chance.

Based on early reports, the RG Rotate may top out around Nintendo 64 when it comes to emulation, though that hasn’t been confirmed yet. A price and release date haven’t been announced, though ANBERNIC says it’s “coming soon.” The company has set up email alerts on its product page for anyone who wants to know first.

Why This One Is Worth Watching

The retro handheld market is packed right now, and most devices in this space look pretty much the same. Even ANBERNIC’s own lineup has dozens of models that follow the same basic layout: screen on top, buttons below, pick your color.ANBERNIC RG Rotate Android Retro Gaming Handheld

The RG Rotate breaks that pattern in a way that actually makes sense. The swivel design isn’t just different for the sake of being different. It makes the device smaller, easier to carry, and less obvious than a normal handheld. Whether you’re using it for games, music, or both, the shape just works.ANBERNIC RG Rotate Android Retro Gaming Handheld

It’s the kind of product that makes you want to play with it, flip the screen back and forth, and show it to the person next to you. In a market where nothing feels new anymore, that counts for something.

More Retro Handhelds We’ve Featured

The RG Rotate joins a growing wave of retro handhelds we’ve covered recently, each taking a different approach to portable gaming. The GameMT EX8 packs a Helio G99 chip and a 3:2 display into a $140 package that undercuts the competition by $90. AYANEO’s Pocket S Mini bets on a 4:3 screen built specifically for pixel-perfect retro gaming, while the Atari Gamestation Go takes a completely different path with a built-in trak-ball, paddle, and D-pad so each of its 200+ classic games gets the controls it was designed for. And if you’d rather turn your phone into a handheld, GameSir’s Pocket Taco adds a portrait-mode Game Boy grip for under $35.
