EDC Knife of the Week: Benchmade Rebuilt a Thinner Bugout for $375

We first covered the Bugout Vapyr after Benchmade announced it at SHOT Show, but with the June 2 launch now less than two months away, this one deserves a closer look.

Benchmade just did the one thing most brands are too scared to try. It took its best-selling EDC knife, stripped it down to its bones, and rebuilt the whole thing from scratch. The Bugout Vapyr isn’t a colorway refresh or a steel swap. It’s a full structural redesign of the knife that defined what a lightweight folder could be, and the result is 33% thinner, 0.13 ounces lighter, and built around a blade steel that didn’t exist when the original Bugout launched.

The 534BK carries a $375 price tag and launches June 2, 2026, with pre-orders already open through authorized dealers. That puts it nearly $200 above the standard Grivory-handled Bugout — a big ask from a brand that built its reputation on delivering serious performance without requiring serious conversations about money. Whether that premium reshapes who the Bugout is for is the question Benchmade is betting on.

What Benchmade Changed in the Bugout Vapyr

The original Bugout worked because it nailed a simple formula: light enough to forget, capable enough to trust, and priced where buying one didn’t feel reckless. The Benchmade Bugout Vapyr takes that formula and rebuilds it with premium materials while pushing the profile even thinner.

Benchmade pulled the liners out entirely. In their place sits a precision-machined 6061-T6 aluminum frame borrowed from the 748 Narrows, one of the brand’s more adventurous recent designs. Removing the liners eliminates the handle flex that Bugout owners have noted for years. The aluminum does all the structural work now, and it does it without adding bulk. The knife practically vanishes in a back pocket.

The AXIS lock got a makeover too. The Vapyr runs a modified torsion-spring version instead of the omega springs found in the standard Bugout. It’s the same mechanism Benchmade used on the Narrows, which the company describes as delivering “buttery smooth blade actuation.” The tradeoff is that the muscle memory more than a million Bugout owners built over years of fidgeting will need recalibrating.

MagnaCut Steel Changes the Conversation

Swapping S30V for MagnaCut is the kind of upgrade that shifts a knife from one category into another. MagnaCut is a powder-metallurgy stainless steel that combines corrosion resistance, edge retention, and toughness in a way that most blade steels force you to choose between. At 60-62 HRC, the Vapyr’s blade holds an edge longer than S30V while handling humidity and moisture without complaint.

Benchmade added a black Cerakote finish over the MagnaCut, which layers scratch resistance and low-glare aesthetics on top of an already corrosion-resistant steel. MagnaCut is inherently stainless, so even where the coating wears through, the blade resists corrosion on its own.

The practical upside is a knife that requires almost zero maintenance beyond resharpening. For someone planning to carry the Vapyr through weeks of hiking, camping, or daily use in humid conditions, the corrosion resistance alone separates it from every other Bugout in the lineup. One functional limitation: a Cerakoted blade won’t strike a ferro rod, a consideration for backcountry users who rely on their knife for fire starting.

How the Bugout Vapyr Carries at 1.72 Oz

At 1.72 ounces with a 4.22-inch closed length, the Vapyr is lighter than the original Bugout by a fraction and dramatically thinner. The reversible deep-carry clip supports tip-up carry on either side, and the ultra-slim profile means the knife sits flat against your leg without the outline that thicker folders leave through fabric.

The 3.24-inch drop point blade runs a flat grind at 0.090 inches thick, which keeps slicing geometry efficient for everyday cutting tasks. Benchmade designed the Bugout as the knife you carry everywhere, not just on trails. The Vapyr pushes that idea further by being thin enough and light enough that taking it out of your pocket before sitting down stops being a reflex.

Taiga Green accents on the backspacer and ambidextrous thumb studs add a quiet visual contrast against the blacked-out aluminum frame. It’s a design choice that reads as intentional without being loud, and it ties the Vapyr into Benchmade’s 2026 seasonal colorway inspired by northern boreal forests.

What $375 Means for the Bugout

At $375, the Vapyr costs nearly double what a standard Grivory Bugout runs. That price covers MagnaCut steel, a Cerakote finish, a machined aluminum frame, and American manufacturing. Benchmade also says the Vapyr has a longer mechanical life cycle than the standard model, pointing to the modified AXIS lock and liner-less construction as durability improvements.

The pricing positions the Vapyr above most of the Bugout lineup — where base models start around $200 and the aluminum M390 variant runs about $320 — but below Benchmade’s premium titanium folders like the $580 Narrows. It also signals that Benchmade sees the Bugout platform as capable of supporting higher-end materials without losing its identity as a lightweight, everyday carry knife.
