Mistral, a France-based artificial intelligence start-up founded in 2023, has announced that it has secured substantial debt financing of $830 million (€723 million). This funding will be used for the construction and operation of a data centre near Paris. The facility will be equipped with thousands of Nvidia chips, underlining Mistral’s commitment to building a robust AI infrastructure.

As one of the few European start-ups developing foundational AI models, Mistral wants to compete with global giants such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The funding remains relatively modest. Even so, Mistral recognises the growing demand for bespoke AI solutions from governments, businesses and research institutions. CEO Arthur Mensch stresses the importance of empowering customers through Europe-based infrastructure and fostering AI innovation within the region.

A consortium of seven international banks is providing the debt financing, including BNP Paribas, Bpifrance, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG and Natixis CIB. The site selected in 2025 for the data centre near Paris will house 13,800 Nvidia GB300 GPUs, giving it a total capacity of 44 MW. Mistral plans to expand its capacity across Europe to 200 MW by the end of 2027.

Although Mistral, with $2.9 billion (around €2.5 billion), is the best-funded LLM developer in Europe, its financing pales in comparison with that of its US counterparts. OpenAI has raised no less than $180 billion (€157 billion). Anthropic, meanwhile, can boast $59 billion (€51.4 billion) in funding.

European AI start-ups are, however, experiencing a wave of investment. In 2026 alone, UK firms Nscale and Wayve raised $2 billion dollars (€1.74 billion) and $1.2 billion (€1.04 billion) respectively. French company AMI Labs secured $1 billion (around €870 million). This trend points to growing confidence in the European AI landscape.
