AI is moving closer to the operating system layer on mobile devices. With the launch of the Galaxy S26, Samsung is embedding Google Gemini deeper into Android, signaling a shift in how apps may interact with the system.
At its recent Unpacked event, Samsung Electronics introduced the Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup with expanded AI capabilities. The devices are scheduled to launch on March 11, 2026, according to Android Central.
During live coverage of the event, TechRadar described Samsung as moving from a traditional operating system model toward what presenters called an “AI OS,” with Gemini “at the heart” of the experience. Samsung has not announced a separate operating system outside of Android. Instead, it is reframing its One UI software around system-level AI that can act across apps.
At Mobile World Congress 2026, Samsung expanded on that direction. In its official newsroom coverage, the company said Galaxy AI is evolving into a more “agentic” companion across its ecosystem. The emphasis is less on adding another assistant feature and more on embedding AI deeper into system behaviour.
How Samsung is moving AI deeper into Android
The most visible change is how tightly Gemini is woven into the user experience. The Times of India reported that Gemini on supported Galaxy devices can automate certain actions across apps, such as managing bookings and handling schedules. That reflects a move beyond answering questions toward executing tasks.
Samsung’s framing at MWC centres on AI that can understand intent and assist across contexts. While the company continues to ship Android with One UI on top, the practical shift is at the OS layer. AI is positioned as a coordinating layer between apps rather than just an interface sitting inside one app.
The “AI OS” label comes from event language and media interpretation rather than a formally branded product. TechRadar’s Unpacked coverage used the term to describe Samsung’s direction. Samsung’s own materials focus on Galaxy AI capabilities rather than declaring a brand-new operating system.
What changes for developers
The deeper story for developers is tied to updates in the Android platform itself.
The Android Developers Blog introduced a new framework called AppFunctions. According to Google’s post, AppFunctions allow developers to expose specific app capabilities in a structured way so that AI agents can discover and invoke them. Official documentation on developer.android.com describes this as enabling system components and AI assistants to trigger defined app actions.
9to5Google reported that AppFunctions make it possible for Gemini to interact with Android apps through declared functions instead of relying on screen automation. That distinction matters. Instead of scraping the UI, the assistant calls predefined operations.
For example, if a travel app defines a booking function with clear parameters, an AI agent can trigger that function when a user says they want to book a trip. The app does not lose control. Developers must opt in and explicitly define which actions are callable. Permissions and boundaries remain part of the design.
This approach changes how teams may think about product architecture. Apps are no longer only user interfaces. They also become collections of services that the OS-level AI can orchestrate.
Cross-app workflows and intent
Agent-style systems rely on linking actions across multiple apps. A single request could involve messaging, payments, maps, and calendar entries. The OS becomes the coordinator.
Google’s developer materials describe this as allowing AI agents to understand user intent and connect it to app functions in a structured way. For developers, that means defining clear contracts around what their apps can do and how those capabilities are described.
This also raises design questions. How are errors handled when an AI agent misinterprets a request? What logs are available when a function is triggered by the system instead of a direct tap? These are practical issues that developers will need to test.
Scale and rollout
Samsung’s AI push is not limited to one device generation. Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Samsung expects to expand Gemini-powered features to 800 million devices in 2026. If that rollout holds, AI integration at the OS layer will reach a broad installed base.
That scale can shift user expectations. If users become used to asking their phones to complete tasks across apps, navigation-heavy workflows may feel outdated. Developers who expose clear, callable functions may benefit from being easier for the system to work with.
On-device AI and performance
Samsung has also highlighted work on on-device AI through its semiconductor division. Its semiconductor site outlines efforts to support local AI inference on mobile processors, aimed at reducing latency and limiting data transfer.
For developers, local inference can influence architecture decisions. Some features that once required constant cloud access may run partly on-device, depending on hardware capability. That may improve response times and support privacy, but it also means testing across different device tiers.
Not every device will have identical neural processing capacity. Developers targeting AI-enhanced features may need fallback paths or adaptive behaviour based on hardware support.
On-device AI in Samsung’s Android strategy
Samsung has not replaced Android. The Galaxy S26 still runs Android with One UI. What is changing is how AI sits inside the system.
The combination of Galaxy AI positioning, Gemini integration, and Android’s AppFunctions framework points to a model where AI is closer to the OS core. Instead of being one more app, it becomes a layer that can coordinate other apps.
For developers, the takeaway is practical. Review how your app defines its key actions. Monitor Android’s AI frameworks and documentation updates. Test how your flows behave when invoked by an assistant rather than by touch.
If AI becomes a common entry point for user intent, the apps that are easiest for the system to understand and execute may have an edge.
