Vanchiyoor Sree Bhagavathi Temple, one of the most revered spiritual centers in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, is set to host the grand Kumbha Thiruvathira Mahotsavam 2026 with deep devotion and traditional grandeur. The festival will be observed from February 27 (Kumbham 15) to March 5 (Kumbham 21), 2026, attracting thousands of devotees from across Kerala.
This annual mahotsavam is celebrated with a harmonious blend of Vedic rituals, temple traditions, classical art forms, and cultural performances, reflecting Kerala’s rich spiritual heritage.
Festival Inauguration – February 27 (First Day)
The festivities begin in the early morning with Mahaganapathi Homam, invoking divine blessings for the successful conduct of the festival. This is followed by the Kodimaram procession, Kalasam, Kalasa Pooja, Panchavadyam, and the auspicious Thrikodiyettu (flag hoisting) along with Kalasabhishekam. In the evening, the sacred ritual of Kappukettu and Kudiyiruthu for the Goddess is performed. From this day onwards, Thottam Pattu and daily temple poojas will be conducted throughout the festival period.
Second Day – February 28
The second day features Aiswarya Pooja and Pushpabhishekam from the evening, followed by enchanting classical and semi-classical dance performances. The cultural program is presented by Chidambara Poornima, Vanchiyoor, under the choreography of renowned artist Sri Girish Mulliyankavu.
Third Day – March 1
The day begins with the traditional Ayilyam Oottu ritual in the morning. A grand Annadanam (free food offering) is served to devotees from 11:30 AM. In the evening, students of Sada Arts Natyavedakalakshetra present Natanatharangam, marking their stage debut, under the artistic direction of Kalavathi Kalamandalam K. B. Kumar Mithyamala.
Fourth & Fifth Days – March 2 and 3
The fifth day is highlighted by a spectacular Mega Musical Show titled Beats of Travancore, led by cinema and television personalities Vithura Thankachan and Akhil Kavalayoor. Featuring eminent singers, musicians, and orchestra teams, the program is staged with an impressive 50,000 watts sound system and 25,000 watts lighting, creating a vibrant festive atmosphere.
Sixth Day – March 4
Rituals such as Nadakanel, Thirumangalyam Charthal, and Payasa Sadhya are performed. The evening showcases a Major Set Kathakali performance depicting Balivanam, followed by community Pongala, elaborate electric illumination, and the drama Vartha presented by Ambalappuzha Aksharajwala, led by Padma Shri Tilakan’s legacy.
Seventh Day – March 5 (Final Day)
The festival concludes with a magnificent Kuthiyottam, Thalappoli, and Vilakku procession, accompanied by Gajaraja Rathnam Parannur Nandan, traditional percussion ensembles, Valluvanadan art forms, Theyyam, Karinkali dance, Nadhaswaram, and Shinkari Melam. A grand cultural comedy show featuring popular cinema and TV artists follows at night. The mahotsavam concludes with Kuruthi Tharpanam in the early hours of the morning.
