Spoken Word Artist Turns Personal Struggle into Growing Mental Health Non-Profit in Los Angeles

Mikey Tableman, the Los Angeles-based spoken word artist and thought leader, is gaining wider attention for his work at the intersection of creativity and mental health advocacy. Tableman is the founder and chief executive officer of A Minds Pursuit (AMP), a 501(c)(3) non-profit that uses artistic expression and community engagement to challenge stigma and encourage open discussion about mental health, particularly among men.

AMP describes itself as more than a traditional charity. The organisation operates across a range of creative initiatives, from live performance events to multimedia projects and educational formats. Central to its work is a belief that vulnerability and honesty can be transformative when shared in public spaces.

Tableman’s own life experiences underpin much of AMP’s mission. Before entering the mental health field, he spent years working in hospitality and nightlife, environments where surface success often masked private struggles. He has spoken openly about battles with addiction, anxiety and depression, and has described a near-fatal suicide attempt as a pivotal moment in his life. Those experiences became the impetus for turning his story into something that could support others facing similar challenges.

“My original dream was to move to LA and be an actor,” he explained in a recent interview. “But after major ups and downs, and confronting how deeply anxiety and depression were affecting me, I discovered that sharing my story was healing – not just for me, but for others.”

From that realisation came AMP’s flagship projects. Among them is Chaos Controlled, a podcast now in its third season that blends candid conversations with guests from sectors such as entertainment and nightlife. Episodes explore topics rarely aired in mainstream media, including burnout, identity and the emotional cost of careers built around performance and public persona.

The organisation also produces Alchemy events, live experiences designed to create safe spaces where people can connect through art, poetry and dialogue. These gatherings aim to foster community and encourage vulnerability in settings that feel creative rather than clinical.

One of AMP’s most personal undertakings is My Manic Maze, an upcoming project that will take the form of both a spoken word EP and a companion book. According to those involved, the work is rooted in Tableman’s lived history with mental health challenges and seeks to create a broader conversation about resilience, recovery and emotional complexity.

Beyond individual projects, the non-profit is expanding into formats such as roundtables focused on men’s mental health and educational initiatives aimed at building emotional literacy in younger audiences. Organisers say the intent is not to replace clinical support services but to complement them by creating environments where people feel seen and heard.

Critics of stigma and advocates within the mental health community note that there remains a significant gap between public discourse and meaningful change, especially in male-dominated cultures where emotional expression is often discouraged. Initiatives like AMP’s are part of a broader trend in which lived experience and community dialogue are valued as tools for cultural shift.

Tableman’s work comes at a time when many sectors are grappling with mental health challenges, from entertainment and hospitality to education and corporate settings. His approach is grounded in narrative (telling real stories without pretence) and in creating spaces that prioritise connection over performance.

As AMP continues to grow and broaden its reach, it highlights a distinctive model in mental health advocacy: one that marries art, personal testimony and community engagement with an explicit mission to make conversations about emotional struggle more accessible, honest and normalised.
