Expert Urges Mindset Shift to Intentional Living for Better Mental Health in 2026

As people begin 2026 feeling burnt out and stretched thin, a psychotherapist says one mindset shift could help them feel more in control and fulfilled in the year ahead.

Joseph Conway, psychotherapist and mental health trainer at Vita Health Group, recommends living intentionally—making conscious and purposeful choices—as a potential game-changer for mental well-being.

What does living intentionally mean?

“Living intentionally involves making conscious choices that reflect what truly matters, rather than just reacting to whatever’s urgent or expected,” says Conway.

He adds that this approach has transformed his own life both as a clinician and a parent. “For me, as a dad of two young daughters, intentional living shows up in the boundaries I set between work and home life. It allows me to be fully present when I’m with them, instead of being half-distracted by my phone, emails or to-do lists.

“I also practice saying ‘no’ to things that aren’t aligned with my goals or energy levels, even if they seem like good opportunities on the surface. Taking the pressure off ‘doing it all’ and focusing on what really counts can be empowering.”

Why intentional living can be fulfilling

Intentionality is more than a lifestyle trend; it is a protective factor for well-being. “Living with intention can be a powerful way to support your mental health because being intentional about how we spend our time and energy can help to reduce stress and gain greater clarity,” Conway explains.

He says making conscious choices aligned with personal values can ease decision fatigue, give a stronger sense of control, and significantly reduce anxiety and overwhelm.

“Intentional living can also bring a deeper sense of purpose, strengthen emotional regulation, and improve relationships. The more self-aware and mindful we become, the more we can respond calmly rather than react impulsively. It also means we invest more fully in the people who matter, and set boundaries with those who drain us.

“Ultimately, this leads to deeper, more satisfying connections and less emotional exhaustion.”

Research supports the mental health benefits of intentional living. Studies indicate that deliberate choices aligned with personal values can lower stress, enhance emotional well-being, and foster a greater sense of purpose. Such practices promote mindfulness, which aids in managing anxiety and preventing burnout.

Vita Health Group, a provider of mental and musculoskeletal health services, partners with the NHS to deliver Talking Therapies across various regions in England. This allows individuals to access free, confidential support for common mental health issues.

Tips for living more intentionally in 2026

Conway offers four practical strategies for those looking to live more intentionally in the new year

  • Get clear on what you value: Reflect on what truly matters to you and let that guide your decisions day-to-day.
  • Set aside small moments to reflect: Screen-free dinners, mindful walks, or just 10 quiet minutes with a warm drink in the morning create space to reset, especially during overwhelming times.
  • Be deliberate with your diary: Before scheduling anything, ask yourself, “Does this reflect what I care about?” Protecting your time strengthens work-life boundaries and prevents burnout.
  • Check in with yourself regularly: Understand that intentional living is a journey, not a destination, and it evolves as you do.

“If you have persistent negative feelings, feel stuck in sadness or anxiety, or start withdrawing from others, it may be beneficial to talk to a mental health professional. It’s important to know that you are not alone, and there are professionals who can help you process your feelings. Contact your GP, or self-refer to a free NHS Talking Therapies service,” says Conway.

As many people look for ways to improve mental health and reduce overwhelm in the new year, experts like Conway emphasise that small, conscious changes can lead to significant improvements in daily life and long-term well-being.
