Listen and learn with a podcourse on migraine from MIMS Learning

GP with an extended role in headache, Dr Deborah Kerr, has created a 3-part, case-based podcourse for MIMS Learning on migraine prophylaxis and management.

Dr Kerr is a GP in Kings Langley and a GP with an extended role in headache at the National Migraine Centre.

In the podcast-style course based around a hypothetical patient called ‘Simone’, Deborah provides practical advice for GPs supporting patients with migraine – including tips on self-management that GPs can pass on to their patients.

She says that addressing lifestyle is a vital first step in this common and debilitating condition, addressing sleep, regular meals, limiting caffeine and workplace screen breaks.

She adds: ‘Medication overuse headache is overlooked far too often, and addressing this can often settle things down quite quickly.’

When patients feel an attack coming on, Dr Kerr says they should take a high dose of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, an antiemetic, and a fizzy, full-sugar cola drink to boost blood glucose and enable medication absorption.

These and other practical tips around management and prophylaxis of migraine, the role of triptans and newer migraine therapies such as anti-CGRP agents, menstrual-related migraine and migraine in children are covered in the podcourse.

The 3 modules on MIMS Learning are exclusive to subscribers and feature worksheets with key learning points, a transcript and suggested further educational activities.
