GP Highlights How Skin Changes Can Reveal Hidden Signs of Diabetes in Men

A UK-based GP has urged men to pay closer attention to changes in their skin, saying these could be early indicators of type 2 diabetes.

Dr Suren Naidoo, a medical practitioner, aesthetic doctor, and member of the scientific advisory board at Dermoi, discussed the connection between metabolic health and the skin during his recent appearance on the DRH Show. He noted that men often overlook subtle symptoms that could signal deeper health problems.

Through his initiative Man Strong 2, which promotes preventive care and long-term health management for men, Dr Naidoo has been raising awareness about the visible signs of diabetes. He explained that while symptoms such as thirst and fatigue are widely recognised, the skin can often provide the first clues that glucose levels are not under control.

According to Dr Naidoo, skin issues like dryness, slow-healing wounds, itching, or darkened patches (particularly around the neck or armpits) can occur when high blood sugar affects circulation and immune response. These changes may appear long before more serious complications arise.

He also pointed out that men are statistically less likely to seek medical advice promptly, which can delay diagnosis and treatment. His work through Man Strong 2 aims to encourage earlier engagement with healthcare and promote routine checks.

Dr Naidoo’s professional background bridges both internal medicine and aesthetics. His approach, he explained, integrates visible skin health with underlying metabolic well-being, helping patients understand how external signs often reflect internal processes.

He said that closer collaboration between GPs and dermatologists could improve early detection. When practitioners recognise patterns of skin conditions associated with diabetes, they can refer patients for further assessment and help prevent serious complications.

As part of his role with Dermoi, Dr Naidoo contributes to its evidence-based approach to skincare. The company’s scientific focus aligns with his goal of linking clinical insight with public education on the importance of treating skin and internal health as interconnected.
